Four live paintings about Jewish emigration throug the Port of Trieste by Cosimo Miorelli
Our Museum is partnering with a project we care a lot about and which will soon lead to four live paintings: in Topolò (11 July), Gorizia (15 July), Trieste (19 July) and Rijeka (5 September).
I’LL GIVE YOU SAFE HARBOUR:
TRIESTE AND JEWISH EMIGRATION.
The lead partner of the project, funded by the Autonomous Region of Friuli Venezia Giulia, is the Topolò-Topoluova Association. Along with us, the project is in collaboration with the Department of Humanities (University of Trieste), the Friends of Israel Association of Gorizia and the Židovska općina Rijeka / Jewish Community of Fiume.
This is a multimedia storytelling performance that aims to show the history and memories of Jewish emigration through the port of Trieste.
Between the late nineteenth and mid-twentieth centuries, in the dark days and years of the pogroms and anti-Semitic persecutions in Central-Eastern Europe, men, women and children moved in search of a better future. For many of them, Trieste and its docks were the last stop before freedom.
At that time, the same building which is now the seat of our Museum constitutes one of the main reception centers for these refugees and one of the pillars of Trieste’s “Gateway to Zion”.
A multidisciplinary team tells the stories that emerges from the historical sources. The digital pen of the internationally renowned illustrator and live painter COSIMO MIORELLI, who will draw the stories live, while the musicians DAVIDE CASALI and MANUEL FIGHELI will accompany the spectators along the journey. The documents of the time – diaries, testimonies, newspaper articles, archive materials – selected and assembled by the historian TOMMASO CHIARANDINI, will be brought to life by the voices of ROBERTA COLACINO and MAURIZIO ZACCHIGNA.
The project has the scientific supervision of TULLIA CATALAN (DiSU, University of Trieste) and ANNALISA DI FANT (“Carlo and Vera Wagner” Museum) and benefits from the help of RINA BRUMINI (Židovska općina Rijeka ), ANTONELLA BUKOVAZ (Topolò-Topoluovi), LORENZO DRASCEK (Amici di Israele di Gorizia), ARIEL HADDAD (“Carlo and Vera Wagner” Museum), VANESSA MAGGI, MATTEO PERISSINOTTO (University of Ljubljana).
We also thank LAURA BRAZZO, ALICE BUOSI, NICOLO’ CAPUS, ARMANDO CHAIM, VANNA COSLOVICH, MAURIZIO ELISEO, STEFANO FATTORINI, AMARYLLIS GACIOPPO, GEORGE KOLBER, JULIE METZ, GABRIELLA NORIO, GLORIA PILASTRO, MICHAEL SIMONSON, ENRICA VIVANTE BELLELI.
